Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed gratitude to President William Ruto for facilitating his impeachment, claiming it has significantly boosted his political influence.
Gachagua, who was ousted in 2024, stated that while his removal from office may have initially seemed like a setback, it ultimately worked in his favor. Speaking to Ukambani vernacular stations on Wednesday, February 26, he asserted that his impeachment enhanced his popularity among Kenyans.
Why Gachagua Sees His Impeachment as a Blessing
Despite losing the privileges of high office, Gachagua said he remains politically relevant and influential. He credited his impeachment for increasing his support base and giving him a fresh start in politics.
“The impeachment did not weaken my ability to mobilize Kenyans. In fact, it has made me even more popular than before. I thank the president for removing me because my political influence is now stronger than ever,” Gachagua stated.
While acknowledging the loss of state benefits, he maintained that his ability to command a national political following has not been affected.
Gachagua Hints at Challenging Impeachment
Gachagua also hinted at exploring legal avenues to overturn his impeachment, allowing him to seek elective office again. Kenyan law bars impeached officials from holding public office, but he pointed to the case of Kiambu Senator Karungo Thangwa, who successfully ran for office in 2022 despite facing similar legal hurdles.
The former deputy president suggested he might take his case to the Supreme Court, hoping to reclaim his right to contest future elections.
