ODM Dismisses Kalonzo’s Claims of Interference in Electoral Team Hiring

ODM refutes Kalonzo’s poll team claims

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has dismissed allegations by Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka that external forces are interfering in the hiring process of Kenya’s new electoral commission officials.

Addressing the press in Nairobi on Wednesday, ODM leader Raila Odinga termed Kalonzo’s remarks as misleading and baseless, insisting that the recruitment process is being handled by an independent selection panel with no political influence.

Kalonzo’s Allegations and Growing Political Tensions

Speaking earlier in the week, Kalonzo had raised concerns that certain powerful figures were attempting to manipulate the hiring process to favor specific political interests ahead of the 2027 General Election. He suggested that without a transparent and accountable selection process, public confidence in the new electoral body would be compromised.

“The independence of our electoral institutions is crucial for democracy. We cannot afford to have a repeat of past mistakes where the electoral commission was seen as a tool of certain political factions,” Kalonzo said.

He further urged all stakeholders to ensure that the hiring process remains free from external influence, emphasizing the importance of a credible electoral commission in safeguarding Kenya’s democracy.

Kalonzo’s statements have sparked fresh debate within the political landscape, with various leaders weighing in on the matter. While some opposition figures have echoed his sentiments, others believe the claims are premature and unfounded.

ODM’s Firm Rebuttal

Responding to Kalonzo’s assertions, ODM leaders maintained that the ongoing recruitment process is fair, transparent, and legally sound. Raila Odinga accused Kalonzo of attempting to cast doubt on a process that has followed constitutional guidelines.

“We must allow institutions to function without political interference. Casting aspersions on the recruitment process without evidence is irresponsible and only serves to mislead the public,” Raila stated.

ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna also criticized Kalonzo, challenging him to present tangible proof of the alleged interference.

“If Kalonzo or anyone else has credible evidence that the process is being manipulated, let them bring it forward. Otherwise, we should not politicize independent institutions for personal or political gain,” Sifuna said.

ODM further reiterated that the selection panel handling the recruitment process is composed of individuals with integrity, and the party expressed confidence that the final appointees would be neutral professionals committed to free and fair elections.

Background: The Importance of a Credible Electoral Commission

The controversy surrounding the hiring process comes at a time when Kenya is still grappling with electoral reforms following the contentious 2022 elections. The previous electoral commission faced accusations of bias and mismanagement, leading to widespread protests and legal battles over election results.

In response to these challenges, a bipartisan parliamentary committee recommended a restructuring of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), leading to the dissolution of the previous team and the establishment of a new selection panel tasked with recruiting fresh commissioners.

The selection panel has since assured Kenyan that it will conduct the recruitment process with utmost transparency, inviting public scrutiny and participation in the vetting of candidates.

Political Underpinnings: A Battle for Electoral Influence?

Political analysts argue that the back-and-forth between ODM and Wiper reflects deeper political maneuvering as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 elections. With key alliances yet to be solidified, the hiring of a new electoral commission is seen as a critical factor that could shape the country’s political landscape.

“Kalonzo’s remarks could be a strategic move to build political capital by portraying himself as a defender of electoral integrity,” says political analyst Dr. Mumbi Ochieng. “At the same time,
