Martha Karua speaking at a political event, emphasizing her decision not to run as a deputy in 2027.

Martha Karua Open to Working with Raila Again but Rules Out Being a Running Mate in 2027

Martha Karua, the leader of the People’s Liberation Party (PLP) and a veteran Kenyan politician, has reaffirmed her willingness to work alongside former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and other political leaders to bring about national transformation. However, she made it clear that she will not accept the role of a running mate in the upcoming 2027 General Election.

Karua’s Willingness to Work with Raila and Other Leaders

During an interview on Citizen TV on Wednesday, February 26, Karua expressed her dedication to national unity and political transformation. She stated that she is open to working with any leader who shares the vision of redeeming Kenya from political and economic challenges.

When asked if she would collaborate with Raila Odinga again, she responded affirmatively but emphasized that she would not take on a supporting role. She suggested that if any partnership were to happen, it should be on equal terms or with Raila backing her instead.

Why Karua Won’t Be a Running Mate Again

Despite her openness to alliances, Karua ruled out serving as a running mate in 2027, even if Raila Odinga or Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka were to request her to be their deputy.

Karua’s firm stance comes after her 2022 experience as Raila’s running mate under the Azimio la Umoja coalition, where they lost to President William Ruto and his deputy, Rigathi Gachagua. She now prefers to either seek a leadership position herself or support others without taking the number two slot.

When pressed further on whether she would reconsider for Kalonzo Musyoka, Karua maintained her position:

Opposition’s Strategy for the 2027 Elections

Karua has also been actively advocating for opposition unity as a strategy to challenge President William Ruto in 2027. She believes that if opposition parties, including Azimio-affiliated leaders and other like-minded politicians, unite behind a single candidate, they stand a better chance of winning.

She dismissed suggestions that regional candidates should run separately, arguing that unity and a common goal should take precedence over individual ambitions.

Her remarks signal a shift in the political landscape as key opposition figures work to solidify their strategies ahead of the next elections. However, with Karua ruling out being a running mate, it remains to be seen what role she will play in the upcoming political realignments.
