A political rift has emerged between the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and the Jubilee Party over Fred Matiang’i’s 2027 presidential candidacy. Kisii UPA leaders have opposed Jubilee’s announcement endorsing Matiang’i, insisting he remains their party’s candidate.
Jubilee Party’s Surprise Endorsement Sparks Controversy
On Saturday, January 25, Jubilee Party Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni declared that the party had settled on Fred Matiang’i as its flagbearer for the 2027 general elections. However, this announcement did not sit well with UPA leaders in Kisii, who maintain that Matiang’i is a UPA member and has already been endorsed to run under their party’s banner.
UPA Leaders Call Out Jubilee Over Matiang’i’s Candidacy
Speaking on Wednesday, February 26, UPA Kisii Chairman Nahashon Nyambane condemned Jubilee’s move, stating that Matiang’i is solely UPA’s presidential candidate.
His sentiments were echoed by UPA official Emmanuel Mwangi, who urged Jeremiah Kioni and Jubilee Party leaders to acknowledge that Matiang’i belongs to UPA, not Jubilee.
Matiang’i’s Political Strength and Ruto’s Re-election Prospects
UPA leaders emphasized Matiang’i’s leadership track record, highlighting his service as Education Cabinet Secretary and Interior Minister as proof of his capability to lead the country.
Meanwhile, Jeremiah Kioni remains firm in Jubilee’s endorsement, arguing that Matiang’i is the best candidate to challenge President William Ruto in 2027. He called on Kenyans to unite behind Matiang’i for a strong opposition front.
With both parties claiming him as their candidate, Fred Matiang’i’s next political move remains uncertain.
