Kalonzo Struggles for Support as Allies and Opportunities Slip Away

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka finds himself in an increasingly uncertain political position, with key allies reconsidering their support and new ones hesitant to commit to his presidential ambitions.

Despite having long-time associates rallying around him, cracks have begun to show. Some of his strongest backers have shifted their stance, while others are yet to decide on their level of commitment.

In a surprising turn, Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni recently announced that former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s party would back Fred Matiang’i as its 2027 presidential candidate—dealing a significant blow to Kalonzo’s bid.

Adding to his challenges, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua stated that opposition politics would be “more exciting” with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga as the presidential candidate, further sidelining Kalonzo.

Meanwhile, Raila—whom Kalonzo has supported in four presidential bids—appears to be solidifying ties with President William Ruto, casting doubt on any possibility of endorsing Kalonzo for the presidency.

Perhaps foreseeing this political shift, Kalonzo had earlier sought to build alliances in the Mount Kenya region, even throwing his support behind Gachagua during last October’s impeachment proceedings in Parliament. However, with political dynamics rapidly changing, his path to the 2027 elections remains uncertain.
