Greenland’s Prime Minister Criticizes Trump’s Renewed Interest in Island, Calls for Respect

Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute B. Egede has strongly criticized U.S. President Donald Trump for his renewed interest in acquiring Greenland, stating that Trump has shown a lack of respect toward Greenlanders in his approach. The remarks came after Trump reiterated his interest in purchasing Greenland during his State of the Union address last Tuesday.

Speaking to Danish public broadcaster DR on Monday, Prime Minister Egede expressed disappointment with Trump’s comments, emphasizing that Greenlanders deserve dignity and sovereignty, not to be treated as a commodity. Egede further stated that Trump’s behavior since taking office has strained relations between Greenland and the United States.

“We deserve to be treated with respect, and I don’t think the U.S. president has done that recently since he took office,” Prime Minister Egede remarked during the interview. “The recent statements from the American president make it clear that people in Greenland are becoming more hesitant about closer relations with the U.S.”

Greenland’s Prime Minister Mute B. Egede has expressed strong disapproval of U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent remarks regarding his renewed interest in acquiring Greenland, stating that the island nation should not be treated as a commodity for sale.

Trump, during his State of the Union address last Tuesday, reintroduced his vision to purchase Greenland, emphasizing massive economic investments and enhanced security for Greenlanders if they agreed to become part of the United States. However, Prime Minister Egede denounced Trump’s approach, stating that his administration has shown little respect toward Greenlanders’ sovereignty.

“We are not an asset to be sold, and we expect our allies to respect that,” said Egede during an interview with Danish public broadcaster DR. “Greenland’s future will always be decided by its people, not by foreign ambitions.”
