Kenyan fencer Alexandra Ndolo has issued a powerful call for reform in the country’s sports management system, highlighting the challenges faced by athletes due to a lack of oversight and accountability. Ndolo, who represents Kenya in international fencing competitions, expressed her frustration with the absence of mechanisms to hold sports federations accountable, describing her three-year search for answers as futile.

In an impassioned online statement, Ndolo candidly shared her struggles, noting that no institution in Kenya appears responsible for regulating or overseeing sports federations. This lack of governance, she argued, is a critical issue that threatens the future of sports in the country.

“I could not find any checks-and-balances system in place,” Ndolo stated. “This is a warning sign, not just for me, but for all Kenyan athletes. The situation is dire, and until there is significant reform, I would advise any athlete to reconsider representing Kenya.”

Despite these challenges, Ndolo remains committed to Team Kenya, with her sights set on qualifying for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Her vision extends beyond personal achievement; she is determined to help establish fencing as a prominent sport in Kenya, honoring her late father’s heritage.

“I wanted to use my talents to bring fencing back to Kenya,” she said. “The first step is done: Kenyans now know fencing. But systemic support is still lacking. Change will only come when those in power take action.”

While public awareness of fencing in Kenya has grown, Ndolo stressed the importance of institutional support in further developing the sport. She has a clear message for sports authorities: “No more empty promises. Action is needed now.”

Ndolo’s call for reform is part of a wider frustration voiced by Kenyan athletes, who, despite excelling on the international stage, continue to face neglect from their home country’s sports management bodies.
