As the world celebrated International Women’s Day, Ugandan filmmaker Linda Dinah was recognized with the Best Female Sound Designer award at the prestigious 6th edition of the Women in Film Awards (WIFA) in Kenya.
The awards ceremony, which honors the achievements of women in the film industry, saw Dinah receive the accolade for her exceptional work on two feature films, The Immersive Alarm and Deadbeat. Both films were created during her time at the MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) East Africa Academy, as part of the Class of 2024. The MultiChoice Talent Factory, known for nurturing creative talents across Africa, provided Dinah with the opportunity to work alongside talented filmmakers, honing her craft in sound design and other areas of production.
In an emotional acceptance speech, Dinah expressed her gratitude for the recognition, highlighting how her journey in the film industry has been shaped by passion, perseverance, and the guidance she received through MTF. “This award is not just for me, but for all the women working behind the scenes in the industry. We are breaking barriers and creating a space where our voices are heard and valued,” Dinah said.
Her work on The Immersive Alarm and Deadbeat was praised for its innovative approach to sound design, with both films featuring rich soundscapes that enhanced the storytelling experience. The films showcased Dinah’s ability to blend technical expertise with artistic vision, transforming each project into a sensory journey for the audience.
In addition to her individual success, Dinah’s recognition at the Women in Film Awards is also a testament to the growing prominence of African filmmakers on the global stage. The WIFA ceremony in Kenya gathered industry professionals, filmmakers, and enthusiasts, all celebrating the contributions of women in the film industry. It also served as a platform for emerging talents to showcase their work and receive the recognition they deserve.
Linda Dinah’s achievement is a reminder of the importance of supporting female filmmakers, especially in regions where women are often underrepresented in technical roles like sound design. With her award, Dinah has set an inspiring example for young women aspiring to work in the film industry, proving that determination and passion can lead to groundbreaking success.
