Kenya-Ethiopia Border Clash Leaves Over 20 Missing as Security Tightens

Kenya has intensified security measures along its border with Ethiopia following a violent clash that resulted in at least 22 people missing. The confrontation, which erupted near the Omo River, involved armed assailants and led to the disappearance of multiple boats.

Kenyan Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen confirmed that officials from both countries are working together to locate the missing individuals. The violence reportedly broke out on Saturday between Ethiopian and Kenyan fishermen, as detailed by Turkana County Governor Jeremiah Lomorukai.

According to local officials cited by the Associated Press, 15 boats vanished during the conflict. Turkana North Deputy County Commissioner George Orina stated that rescue teams faced challenges accessing the affected area and instead relied on survivor testimonies.

“So far, 16 boats have been accounted for, along with one firearm and a motorbike,” Orina said. “However, 22 people, including fishermen and pastoralists, remain unaccounted for.”

Authorities have prepared body bags in case casualties are discovered before search efforts resume on Monday. Meanwhile, the Kenyan Red Cross has been offering psychological support to survivors.

The Turkana and Dassanech communities, spanning both Kenya and Ethiopia, have long engaged in shared economic activities such as fishing and pastoralism. However, the region has a history of recurring conflicts, often driven by livestock raids. Security operations remain challenging as attackers frequently retreat into Ethiopian territory.

In response to the latest violence, Murkomen announced plans to establish a formal border post, ensuring that all individuals crossing into Kenya undergo security screenings.
