Kenyan digital creators delivered an impressive performance at the 2025 TikTok Awards Sub-Saharan Africa, held in Johannesburg, South Africa. The ceremony, themed “New Era, New Icons,” celebrated creators who are transforming Africa’s digital landscape through storytelling, entertainment, and cultural influence.

A Celebration of Africa’s Digital Evolution

The star-studded event highlighted the growing impact of African content creators. Hosted by South African entertainer Bontle Modiselle-Moloi, the awards featured top performers including Ciza, Lord Kez, DJ Fif_Laa, Thuli P, and Thabsie. Surprise appearances by athlete Akani Simbine and influencer Mihlali Ndamase added extra excitement to the night.

Creators from Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, and Tanzania took home major wins, showcasing the region’s diverse talent and fast-rising digital economy.

TikTok’s Head of Content Operations for Sub-Saharan Africa, Boniswa Sidwaba, praised the finalists, describing them as “trailblazers who have redefined what it means to be a creator in Africa.”

Rising Star of the Year: Tunero Animations

Nairobi-based Tunero Animations claimed the coveted Rising Star of the Year award. Their animated character, Bob Kichwa Ngumu, known for his stubborn, sarcastic humour, has attracted a growing fanbase both locally and internationally.

Sports Creator of the Year: John Maingi Mbugua

In the sports category, John Maingi Mbugua of Zoza Podcast won Sports Creator of the Year for his energetic, fan-driven football analysis. His acceptance speech earned cheers from the audience.
