Former Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Nelson Havi has called on voters participating in today’s by-elections to elect competent leaders and reject any form of intimidation or bribery.
Havi urged voters in Malava, Mbeere, Magarini and Ugunja constituencies to exercise their sovereign power responsibly by choosing leaders of integrity and vision.
“You are the sovereign,” he said, reminding citizens that real political authority rests with the people.
He cautioned communities heading to the polls to look beyond short-term inducements.
“Elect MPs competent to serve you,” Havi said. “Do not be misled by voter treating, bribery or intimidation.”
His remarks came with a spirited appeal for civic vigilance:
“We are the People. The People SHALL. The People MAY. Iwinjo?”
KNCHR Warns of Violence, Rights Violations Ahead of By-Elections
Havi’s call coincided with mounting concern from the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR), which has warned of potential violence, disruptions and human rights violations during the by-election period.
In a statement released on Wednesday, KNCHR highlighted several incidents reported during the campaigns, including:
- Clashes in Kasipul Constituency where two people were killed
- Violent disruptions of campaign events
- Allegations of excessive force by police
- Sightings of non-uniformed police in Mbeere North, contrary to a High Court ruling
The Commission noted that these incidents threaten constitutional rights such as the right to life, security, peaceful assembly and political participation.
KNCHR reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding human rights throughout the electoral process and urged law enforcement agencies to conduct timely, transparent investigations into all reported violations.
IEBC and Political Leaders Urged to Uphold Peace
The Commission appealed to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to conduct the by-elections fairly and transparently, while guaranteeing the safety of voters and candidates.
Political parties and contestants were also urged to avoid:
- Violence
- Hate speech
- Voter bribery
- Intimidation
Instead, KNCHR encouraged them to promote peace, respect for the law and protection of all electoral participants.
